Parent Information for May and Summer

Summer is almost here.  We have a lot of new students joining the School of Engineering and the STEM Academy.  We want to make sure you have as much information as possible.  More will be coming out as it is available.  All summer activities are open to both current and future students.  If you know someone who missed this newsletter, please forward it to them.

All STEM students and (EXCITE IV + Infinity II) students will be going to 6 flags for our end of the year field trip.  Students must be passing all classes on the 6th 6 weeks progress report.  The trip is on May 23.  We will return to CHS at approximately 7pm.  The cost of the trip is $35 ($10 if you have a season pass).  Money and permission forms are due by Monday 5/21.  If you do not bring your season pass with you, you will have to purchase a full price ticket at the gate.  Students who do not bring their form and money, or are not cleared by their teachers, will stay at school and have assignments for the day.

The Engineering Banquet is on Monday, May 21 at CHS.  Tickets are $10 each.  Information can be found on the Booster Club Website at chsengineeringboosters.com

All 9th and 10th grade STEM students will be taking a free practice SAT test on Friday, 5/18.  The test will be like the SAT, but without the essay.  The test is being sponsored again by C2 in Coppell.  There is no obligation to utilize any C2 services, but parents must meet with the C2 staff to obtain the results.  Taking the practice test serves a number of purposes.  First, students are able to get more practice taking the SAT and SAT.   The more comfortable students are with the test, the better they perform.  There are a number of scholarships associated with PSAT scores.  The second main purpose is for the Academy staff to have more information on the students for curriculum development purposes this summer.

The Student Design Teams are working to put on a number of workshops this summer for the current and future team members.  Most of these workshops will take between 30-90 minutes.  We have a long list of potential workshops.  This summer, we are starting with several that we feel will have the largest immediate impact on the programs.  We are also looking for parents or organizations that would like to help put these on.  Possible topics include:
  • Safety
  • Tool Training
  • Project Management
  • Budgeting
  • Social Media and Marketing
  • Small business operations (our teams are essentially small businesses)
If you would like to help with these, please contact Mr. Yakubovsky at myakubovsky@coppellsid.com.  Any students interested in joining the teams (including current 8th graders) are welcome to come this summer.

We will be having an orientation session for current team members and students interested in joining our teams this summer.  The meeting will be on Monday, June 4 at 6pm in the lecture hall.  Any student interested in either the Solar Car Team or the FIRST Robotics Team is welcome to attend and start working with the teams this summer.

All 2012-2013 STEM students are invited and encouraged to attend the STEM Boot Camp on August 10th and 11th.  We will be rolling out our new mentoring program and welcoming everyone back to school.  Wrapping up the boot camp will be our first Annual STEM Family Picnic.   We will be providing hamburgers and hot dogs.  Students/parents will need to bring a side dish or condiments and something to drink.  More information will be posted on the announcements blog.  There are no sign ups required for Boot Camp or for the picnic.

The solar car team will be competing in the Solar Car Challenge this summer at Texas Motor Speedway from July 16-July 19.  We invite everyone to come out and see the team and cheer them on.

The Engineering Expo is on November 4th this year.  We are having a robotics/automation theme.  We are in need of assistance with several parts of the expo and preparation.  The work is not a full time job, but each of the roles are extremely important for the program’s success.  Each year, many of our students are helped out with college admissions and scholarships because of the Expo.  Colleges across the country know our program and the great work our students do.  We will be posting a list of needed roles on the engineering website at www.coppellisd.com/engineering/expo

Dual Credit registration starts Monday, June 18.  To help out the students, STEM instructors will be meeting the STEM students in the west parking lot at the Coppell campus of Northlake College on Monday, June 18 at 8 am.  All current 10th and 11th grade students taking STEM next year (rising 11th and 12th graders) are taking Dual Credit courses as a part of the STEM Curriculum.  All students meeting us that morning can turn in their DCCCD course schedules after registering to the STEM faculty right then.  We will turn them in to the CHS counselors for you to get your fall CHS schedule fixed.  Students not able to meet us that morning can take care of registration later, on their own, and then bring the course schedules to their counselor at their earliest convenience.  If you have registration questions, please contact your counselor.

We will use our blog at http://coppellengineering.blogspot.com/ to help keep everyone up to date on all announcements and information about the program.  From this location, you can choose the best manner of digital communication for you.  You can subscribe to the blog by rss feed or email update.  The blog is fed to our STEM Facebook page which also allows for text updates.  Finally, the blog is also fed to our STEM Twitter account.  Hopefully, one of these methods will work for you and allow you to keep up to date on all STEM and School of Engineering information.  On the blog page is a link to our calendar.  This calendar is also linked with the EBC calendar so you can keep up with everything going on.
