As we mentioned earlier in the semester, we have a field
trip coming up. On Tuesday, April 3, we
will be taking the students to both IBM and Brookhaven College. This trip will be focusing on Geographical
Information Systems (GIS). GIS is a
growing, high-demand field. GIS is an
integration of hardware, software, and data.
It allows users to capture, manage, analyze, and display all kinds of
geographically referenced data.
Businesses and governments alike use GIS to make a whole host of
decisions and plans. Brookhaven College
has been fortunate to develop one of the leading GIS programs in the
country. They are making the first part
of the program available to our students through Dual Credit starting next
year.
While at IBM, the
students will get a chance to see many of the behind-the-scenes happenings at
IBM and learn more about IBM’s work in GIS.
From there, students will travel to Brookhaven for lunch (students will
bring a sack lunch) and then tour the labs.
They will get to meet with the professors and learn more about the GIS
program.
